MY PICKS FOR DECEMBER

It is December 2nd today and these are the books I think you should read (these are especially for you Ayesha Omair)

1. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

"Pip is such a relatable and determined character, and her investigation into a cold case murder was absolutely gripping. I loved how she used her wit and logic to unravel clues while juggling school life and unexpected dangers. The book also makes you think about the biases in small towns and how rumors can destroy lives. The twists genuinely shocked me, and the mix of interviews, diary entries, and narration made it feel so real. I couldn’t stop until I knew the truth—it’s like solving a puzzle, and every piece matters!"

2. One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

"This book hooked me from the first chapter. Four teens with secrets, one of them dead, and everyone’s a suspect! I loved how the story alternated between their perspectives, so you really got inside their heads. Every time I thought I knew who was guilty, another twist threw me off! The drama felt very high school—love triangles, betrayal, and cliques—but the mystery was on another level. By the end, I was completely invested in all the characters and their stories. A perfect mix of suspense and high school drama!"

3. The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

"Avery’s story is like a dream turned into a puzzle-filled nightmare. Imagine inheriting billions from a stranger, but the catch is—you have to live with his family, who aren’t exactly happy about it. The riddles, secret passages, and family drama kept me on the edge of my seat. I especially loved the Hawthorne brothers; they’re all so different but equally fascinating. Avery is smart, resourceful, and easy to root for, and the wintery mansion setting makes the mystery even more intense. It’s like Knives Out but better!"

4. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

"This book is the perfect blend of a murder mystery and a boarding school drama. Ellingham Academy is such a cool setting—it’s elite, quirky, and full of secrets. Stevie is my kind of heroine: obsessed with true crime, super smart, and a little socially awkward. The mystery spans decades, which adds so much depth, and the clues are scattered so cleverly. I felt like I was solving the case right alongside Stevie, and even though this is just the first book, it totally hooked me. The snowy, isolated vibe made it perfect for winter!"

5. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

"This book was like a slow-burning fire that suddenly explodes. At first, it felt like a dreamy summer story about a rich family on a private island, but then the cracks began to show. Cadence, the narrator, is unreliable but so heartfelt, and her memories unravel in a way that keeps you guessing. The plot twist hit me like a ton of bricks—I had to reread parts just to process it. It’s haunting and beautiful, with themes of love, privilege, and tragedy. Perfect for a chilly night when you want to feel all the emotions!"

6. The Cousins by Karen M. McManus

"Another masterpiece from Karen McManus! This one is all about family secrets and betrayal, set on a creepy island where nothing is as it seems. Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah are sent to reconnect with their mysterious grandmother, but everything spirals into chaos as they uncover the family’s dark past. I loved how each character had their own struggles and how the story unfolded layer by layer. The winter setting added to the suspense, and the ending blew my mind—it’s definitely a page-turner!"

7. Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

"This book is a thrilling mix of historical fiction and murder mystery. Audrey Rose is such a bold, fearless character—she challenges societal norms by studying forensic medicine in Victorian England. The hunt for Jack the Ripper is chilling, and the descriptions of the crime scenes are both gruesome and fascinating. I loved her banter with Thomas Cresswell (he’s charming and infuriating in the best way). The foggy London setting makes it feel so atmospheric, and the twists kept me guessing until the end. It’s dark, gripping, and impossible to put down!"

8. Whiteout by Dhonielle Clayton, et al.

"This book was so unique! It’s set during a massive snowstorm in Atlanta, and while there’s romance at the heart of it, the story is also full of mystery and surprises. The characters are diverse and relatable, each with their own perspective on love and friendship. The snowy, chaotic setting made it feel so immersive, and I loved how everything connected by the end. It’s heartwarming and suspenseful—a perfect mix for a cold winter night!"

9. People Like Us by Dana Mele

"This book gave me Pretty Little Liars vibes but darker and more intense. Kay, the main character, is part of an elite boarding school where a classmate turns up dead—and a scavenger hunt reveals everyone’s darkest secrets. The atmosphere is super moody and cold, and I loved how the story explored themes like guilt, loyalty, and privilege. It’s twisty, thrilling, and totally binge-worthy. I couldn’t trust anyone, and the ending was shocking!"

10. The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett

"This is a fantasy-mystery hybrid, and it’s amazing! The story is about Ekata, who unexpectedly becomes a ruler in a frozen kingdom after a mysterious incident leaves her family in a coma. There’s political intrigue, romance, and lots of secrets to unravel. The icy castle and wintry world made me feel like I was there, and Ekata’s inner struggles made her so relatable. The mystery was suspenseful and beautifully written. It’s perfect for anyone who loves fantasy with a touch of danger!"
